Buy Travel Insurance
How important to buy travel insurance?
Travel costs can be expensive year by year. Most often, we’ve seen the final screen with question if you would like to buy travel insurance for your trip
Travel insurance is a smart choice for worry-free travel in 2025. It acts as a golden Plan B for safety. The average emergency medical claim now runs about $2,500, with some cases reaching over $32,900 for serious injuries or evacuations. Without insurance, these costs fall entirely on you.
Around 80% of travelers today pick plans wherever they go. For many travelers who take long, expensive, or international journeys, purchasing travel insurance is a must. Single-trip insurance typically costs just $30 to $33, a small price for big peace of mind.
For less than a meal, you secure coverage for unexpected travel disruptions, such as, emergencies, cancellations, and delays, making travel insurance an affordable, essential investment for safe journeys in 2025.
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance helps protect travelers from losing money when unexpected problems happen during a trip. It covers different situations, from small issues to serious emergencies. If something goes wrong and fits the policy’s rules, the insurance will pay for it.
Usually, a good travel insurance policy covers many things, such as canceling or interrupting the trip, medical costs, emergency hospital visits, losing baggage, and even accidental death or serious injury. For example, if you cancel your trip because of sudden illness, an accident, a natural disaster, or a family member’s death, the insurance can pay back the prepaid costs.
During the trip, travel health insurance is helpful because regular health coverage like Medicare often does not work outside your home country. It can pay for hospital stays, medical treatments, emergency medical evacuation, or sending a body home in case of death.
Typically, travel insurance costs about 4% to 10% of your total trip price. It’s meant to protect you from unexpected problems that could otherwise cause big financial losses.
How to choose the right policy?
The price and benefits of travel insurance depend on three main things: your age, how much trip cost you cover, and when you buy it:
1️⃣ Age: Older travelers usually pay more. Prices go up a lot every 10 years after age 50. Purchasing travel medical insurance for travelers over 70 years old can be expensive. Furthermore, older travelers are more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition. To ensure that coverage for pre-existing medical conditions is included, older travelers should buy their policy shortly after booking the trip.
2️⃣ Trip cost covered: The price of a standard insurance policy typically ranges from 4–10% of the total trip cost. To be eligible for certain key benefits, such as a waiver for pre-existing medical conditions, you must purchase coverage for 100% of all nonrefundable trip costs. If you want “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage, it costs much more—about 50% more than basic insurance. However, CFAR coverage is limited in reimbursement, typically only paying back 50 to 75 percent of your prepaid trip cost.
3️⃣ Timing of purchase: The moment you purchase your policy is crucial because travel insurance is designed to protect against sudden and unforeseen events. To maximize your benefits—especially coverage for events like tour company or air-carrier bankruptcies or protection for pre-existing medical conditions of yourself or family members—you must purchase the policy shortly after making your first trip payment. Usually, you have 7 to 21 days after booking to do this. If you wait too long—for example, after a named storm—you won’t be covered for related claims.
